NPD CO.,LTD. Manager

Nalat Usupharat

How did you decide to join NPD?

My friend was the one who first introduced me to NPD in Thailand. At first I did not know what NPD did but became interested in its business. I received a phone call at my home in Thailand, but by coincidence I was traveling in Japan at that time. In a surprising turn of events, during my stay in Japan I was interviewed and was offered a position! I felt that there was some special luck that I had, but what made me decide to accept the job offer was how the employees treated me. They were all very kind, and I was surprised that I was able to talk with the board members frankly. Through this first interaction with NPD, I thought that, “I will be OK here.” Even after 4 years working at NPD my first thoughts about NPD hasn’t changed.

What operations are you in charge of?

I am in charge of system operation and maintenance throughout the NPD group. This includes the maintenance of the server, network, core system, sales system and security. Other than that I am always looking for a more secure and efficient way to improve the NPD business flow. What’s challenging about my job is that I need to understand the business itself to be able to make improvements. So I always need to keep an eye open to know what is happening within the group.

What is NPD like?

NPD does not discriminate against gender, age or nationality. Opportunities are given to everyone who is eager and willing to achieve something. After 2 years working at a Parking site in a Hotel, I was transferred to the IT department. I majored in Japanese so I had no knowledge of experience in the IT field. In Thailand you can only work in fields where you have majored in so I very surprised to be able to work in the IT field. It has only been 2 years since I was transferred to the IT department, but I am in charge of a wide range of assignments. I think it is rare for companies to give opportunities to employees without any experience. Before working in Japan I was told that Japanese companies are very difficult work at because of the seniority. But I am really grateful for such a friendly, transparent and challenging environment.

Was NPD just as you imaged?

Once I joined the company, I was surprised how important the Gemba (Parking site) was to NPD. In Thailand, when you graduate from university, new employees usually start with a job in offices, not the Gemba. At first it was difficult to get used to my job there, but I was able to learn how the business is run through daily work at the Parking site. It is only on site where we could understand the true needs of customers, and improve the working environment for employees. These insights I learned through my Gemba experience could not have been acquired through data or books, and is definitely helping me greatly with my daily duties improving the NPD group IT environment.

What is your next step in the NPD Group?

After gaining experience in NPD Japan, I would like to spread the know-how of the IT systems we use to other offices in the world. NPD has a vision that I think would be accepted in many countries. I want to help spread that vision by standardizing our service and work environment in order to build a strong Global NPD Group.

To our future employees.

There are many opportunities in NPD and those who make progress will be recognized and will be offered a more challenging field. There are many energetic employees that will help you along. We are all waiting to work with you!
